Announcement

Towards Tokyo 2020 Paralympics

The process for finalising the sports programme for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games has been communicated by the IPC.

BWF will submit a first proposal for medal events and qualification process for para-badminton on 10 February 2017. Over the next few months the BWF and IPC will discuss this first proposal and finalise this mid 2017. The IPC will then prepare the final sports programme for the Games in July / August and then make an announcement on 4 September 2017.

BWF will submit a para-badminton programme that will best showcase our sport. It should be noted that not all 22 medal events currently in para-badminton will be proposed as there is a limited number of events that we can propose for the Games – and a limited number of places.

We need to be realistic with the proposal and ensure excellence, high performance, universality and gender equality.

 Criteria

The BWF will use the general criteria below to draft the best possible programme for the sport:

  • Essence of badminton – showcasing our sport – singles / doubles / mixed doubles play
  • Showcasing excellence – this is about world class performances
  • High entertainment value – the most entertaining for spectators / broadcasters
  • Universality – ensuring diversity – impairment classes / regions of the world
  • Equality – equal numbers of men / women.

Timeframes

  • 10 February 2017 – BWF makes a proposal to the IPC
  • March – May 2017 – the proposal is discussed between the BWF and the IPC
  • June – July 2017 – the programme for badminton is agreed between the BWF / IPC
  • July – August – IPC finalises the complete sports programme
  • 4 September 2017 – IPC announces the sports programme for Tokyo 2020
  • 1 January 2018 – Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Qualification Guide is published.

Announcement

The IPC will make the announcement on 4 September 2017. The BWF will not be making any comments on the proposals for the para-badminton programme until after the IPC announcement in September.
