Awards

The BWF has a system of awards to recognise excellence, achievement and service to the sport and to the badminton community.  The system of awards is governed by the Award Regulations which detail the selection criteria for each award and defines who can nominate individuals and organisations for an award.

Nominations must be received by the Secretary General no later than 31 October each year.  These will be reviewed by the Awards Commission and recommendations are then made to the Administration Committee and then to Council at its November / December meeting.

BWF Gala Awards Night 2016

BWF once again hosted the Gala Awards night in Dubai and presented the annual Player of the Year Awards. The winners were:

  • Lee Chong Wei (MAS) – Male Player of the Year
  • Misaki Matsumoto /Ayaka Takahashi (JPN) – Female Player of the Year
  • Lucas Mazur (FRA) – Male Para-Badminton Player of the Year
  • Karin  Suter-Erath (SUI) – Female Para-Badminton Player of the Year
  • Chen Qingchen (CHN) – Eddy Choong Most Promising Player of the Year
  • Pusarla V Sindhu (IND) – Most Improved Player of the Year

Each gold medallist at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was presented with the “Golden Shuttle” award to honour their achievement as Olympic Champions of the sport.

BWF Gala Awards Night 2015

The BWF hosted the Gala Awards Night in Dubai in December 2015 as part of the Dubai BWF World Superseries Finals. The winners of the player of the year award were:

  • Chen Long (CHN) – Male Player of the Year
  • Carolina Marin (ESP) – Female Player of the Year
  • Zheng Si Wei (CHN) – Eddy Choong – Most promising Player of the Year
  • Lee Sam Seop (KOR) – Male Para-Badminton Player of the Year
  • Helle Sofie Sagoy (NOR) – Female Para-Badminton Player of the Year

Hall Of Fame

The BWF Hall of Fame is to honour players and occasionally administrators who have enhanced their sport through exceptional achievements. Nominees are members of the badminton fraternity who have retired from the sport of badminton for a period of five years or more.

Male / Female Player of the Year

The criteria for the male and female player of the year awards is based on the performance of the players in the BWF World Superseries events and BWF Major Events – BWF World Championships, BWF Sudirman Cup and the BWF Thomas Sup and BWF Uber Cup.

Male / Female Para-Badminton Player of the Year

The awards are to honour badminton and para-badminton talent and top world performance in the sport across a calendar year. The criteria is based around exceptional and consistent performance across a calendar year. This includes exceptional performance at the Paralympic Games, BWF events, World Championships and Continental Championships.

Eddie Choong Most Promising Player of the Year Award

The Eddy Choong Most Promising Player of the Year Award is recognises one individual, an emerging top world talent in the sport. The award reflects promising and improving performances across a calendar year.

President's Medal

The President's Medal is to honour distinguished individuals or organisations who have made an exceptional contribution to badminton.

BWF President

Herbert Scheele Trophy

The Herbert Scheele Trophy is presented for outstanding and exceptional services to badminton. Recipients of this award are presented with a replica of the Herbert Scheele Trophy.

Lifetime Achievement Award

The Lifetime Achievement Award is a highly prestigious award given by the BWF to recognize individuals who have made a significant and lifetime contribution towards the advancement and promotion of the sport worldwide.

The Women in Badminton Award recognises an individual (man or woman) or an organisation that has made a significant contribution towards the involvement of women or girls in badminton.

Meritorious Service Award is presented to honour exemplary service to badminton at the national level.

A Certificate of Commendation shall be awarded, where appropriate, to commercial undertakings and other external organisations that have rendered significant service to the sport for no less than three years.
